thanx adam and consolidated for all what you bring concerning the "REAL" music. you inspired me and a lot of people.

here's a little trick for those who want to play an electric instrument in public place : go in a public parc where there is, sometime, electrical outlet that provide the electricity for tree light, outdoor light or any usefull shit like that. plug your amps and instruments in those hole.

garanteed, it will work

OB0wHI Hello! I'm Samuel Smith, i'm from Switqerland i and find your site really brilliant!

Matski

May 1, 2008

Let me inform you about someone who made it a profession cheating small independent labels and DIY (Do It Yourself) products. His name: Derek Sivers, his company: CD Baby. For those not in music bizz or unfamiliar with CD Baby, this is how it works: CD Baby is a cd mail order. They take and distribute every cd, even if it is f.e. a handmade sharpie drawn cover with a cheap self burned cdr inside. But to drop you’re cd at that baby you have to pay him $ 35 per release. They take 5 copies of you’re product in stock, keep one for themselves (only 4 left to sell) and you get a page on their site. The rest is as any other cd-store.
Derek claims he takes care of you. So he endlessly bothers you with his irritating emails about how brilliant, great and wonderful he is. He suggests you “great” ideas how to become famous. Ideas we “never” thought of like: looking for a certain agent, find the address and contact her/him. Or: want to have your song on the radio, call the broadcasting station you like. Sure Derek, we never tried these things. You are the only smart person on this planet, we are all stupid!
Once I had a mail of Derek in which he claims that he helped the indie musician by sleeping on his office sofa for 7 years. I must say Derek, I am impressed. We all would like to get rich, sleeping. But how many indie musicians did you really help?
Derek is a typical example of a loudmouth, Pim-Frits juppy rip-you-of smug. Surfing on the web I found out that besides being selfish, he is a huge crazy narcistic maniac, handling several websites. Learning Derek’s “way of writing” he clearly talks “great” about himself in a third person! What a joke. So I read on your own pages, Derek, that you are a musician for your whole live. If you’re advises turn somebody so easy into a “big star” how come you are not the biggest, richest most famous musician in the world? Or is the name Derek Sivers a cover-up? Is you’re real name Britney Spears?
How did this mental hospital patient manage to rip poor people of? Simple. With all their false promises his company managed to get shit loads of cd releases in their warehouse. Famous and totally unknown artists. The balance between the known and the unknown is a reflection of reality. There are loads of bands and performers, only a few sell. The screaming CD Baby propaganda is the usual misleading statistics. “We pay every week over $ 60,000 to our artists”. Yes, to a handful well-known indie "stars" who’s managers leave their product at CD Baby. They would have sold these cd’s without CD Baby anyway. 95% of the cd’s at CD Baby are forgotten plastic. Collecting dust in their warehouse. Never to be sold. But Derek has $ 35 for every contribution. With all these ten thousands contributions of never selling indie cd’s (we honest real musicians worked hard for to create), Derek got himself a nice figure on his bank account. Let’s get real here. If you go to the corner store to leave a few copies of your home made cd, do you give the store owner $ 35 on top? Hell no! Since the strong indie 70ties you can easily negotiate a profit/sales price with your local salespoint. I know what I am talking about. Did and still do it myself. Have that many years behind me. Derek was probably a test-tube fetus in those years.
Yes I admit, I got tricked too and dropped some Limbabwe products at CD Baby. Got suspicious at the tone of Derek’s first mail that arrived in my box. Since that time I ignore these nonsense. He tries to lead you to other companies, probably also owned by Sivers, or his friends. And again you are asked to waste hard earned money while you’re music is lost like a needle in a haystack. Believe me, these companies are not the magnet.
We all know that it takes a lot more than one online cd store with some advices, to become a regular selling artist. If you’re cd goes well, yourself with others did the job, not CD Baby.
At the moment Derek sells the company CD Baby. Just in time, now cd sales dived to an absolute lowest level, and will only sink deeper. Whoever took over must be a big fool. Derek does not care. His bag is filled. A good figure with many zero’s earned with our sweat.
Derek steals from poor musicians in full consciousness taking in consideration that he is smart enough setting up bizznix and sell them. Do not fall for the trick!
Lucky me, there are just not enough brain cells under his skull to understand that we do not all go for the same thing. Hopefully that keeps his unfair bizznix far away from my surroundings.
You wanna have some real advice? Don’t even bother wasting your cd, time and money at CD Baby. That $ 35 is thrown away. Spend it on some phonecalls to concert promoters, or better, a set of new strings, drumsticks or other useful instrument parts. No need for this? Buy some drinks and have a jam with your friends. Than you play real music, do real music and are real music. Plus you know what, its fun. You will have a much better time than getting frustrated over these Derek emails.
CD Baby takes $ 4 of every cd sold. This is a standard cut salespoints take. If CD Baby would be a true honest competitive company, helping musicians, they would give everybody their $ 35 back without cutting services. They would get equal to similar stores and have to sweat it selling all this unheard music, earning their share from the music buyer and not the music maker. But that would be too hard of a job for the money, isn’t it Derek? Derek….Hey Derek….. Wake up! Napping on that sofa again?
As soon Derek wakes up he will start spitting around his usual bullshit. I will disappear next door, were my gear is, to jam some tunes. Maybe I switch the tape on and record a few, or invite friends to jam along. We might take it out of the house and become big stars among the local kids and apple trees, famous and beloved by the passers-by and neighbors cat joining our gig in the front lawn. For free. Hand them gratis self recorded cd’s. No stage, no soundcheck, no contract, no deal, no CD Baby, no music-bizznix, but lots of music and honest fun brought with a good spirit (apple moonshine?).
Interested in Limbabwe music? Go to the site www.limbabwe.com . You will figure out my whereabouts. Ask, and I give you. No charge. Or mail me. Email you find on the same site.

Dear Adam
Im a 28 year old grad student who is to be married next month. The problem is that my mother in law does not like my aunt who is providing all the flowers and bows. My uncle James is visiting from Greece and wants a motorcycle wedding but insists the motorcycles have ice racing spikes on the tires. This has angered my mother in law even more who wants to use yellow motorcycle tires made of sponge to match my aunts flowers. She also wants the spiked tires to be used as table decorations as well as on the tricycles for the kids. I just wish all these people would at least take the time............ to.........woops. I thought this was Dear Abby.....sorry

Hello Adam! Saw Consolidated way back in 1991 (when I was eighteen!) at Limelight in NYC. Still own a cassette of Friendly Fascism. Want to get all other previous & future releases I've missed. You guys were great. So kind and informative. I am slowly re-educating myself again after political meandering/wavering beliefs, and suffering from anxiety/depression/emotional abuse. Have you read any of Derrick Jensen's books? Or even Cunt by Inga Muscio? That's some right-on, hot shit! May good things come your way!

Adam, when I brought you to Sol 3 Records I had only the best intentions and the most respect for you. As time went on I saw how fucked up the music business was (is) and without recognizing it at first I realized that by association I became a part of the Dog & Pony Show. After hearing Business of Punishment I felt so connected to your lyrics that I wrote a letter, just thanking you for being fucking honest about what goes on in our world, and that's how we met. I had to explain to the people "above" me that you weren't an artist all about the money, the tourbus, and the numbers. Unfortunately I was left out of a lot of the decisions that were made regarding your music and the "direction" it was suppose to take. I know that "Dropped" is a beautiful record, and "Tikkun" and Childman. I never meant to make you a part of the machine that you despise, but in retrospect that's exactly what I did. You inspired me from the first time I heard "No Answer For a Dancer" and I've been a veggie for 10 years, thanks to the knowledge you dropped. I love the new videos and I would love to see you in Portland soon. BTW- Fractured Fairytales is still my favorite song. Cheers to big butts! Lovejoy

dear adam,
i was feeling you today.
prior to coming home and opening my email and seeing your email sharing "Free Music, Stop America" with us, i was dialoging with some mates about how your music, message, strength and conviction in not only speaking up but also doing what needs to be done to make this spinning planet of ours, a better place had inspired me to take action in my community to help right the wrongs.
peace & prosperity to you... and the rest of the planet.

These days my all time favorite "music" comes from the sounds of people living and animals and the wind and on that rare occasion, the greatest song of all, silence. once a song is recorded it is stuck in time and also a part of a vast library, this can stress me out.
At the same time I still love its existence and sometimes go goo goo over it.

“Eve of destruction” was written by PF Sloan in 1965 and we’re still in that eve. Critical pop-songs, or so called “protest songs”, have always been written, and adored by people seeking for confirmation that something is “wrong”. The industry and artist are very aware of this. Here money is made. Whether you are Bono or Bob, Consolidated or Crass. Their concern about the cash is more important than social circumstances. The ”Kollaps” (collapse) never came, instead did money and fame. Biafra has his holidays on the beach in Montenegro now. If the message would be real out of the heart they would give their music away for free! Can you “Imagine” it? “People get ready” wondering “what’s going on”, meanwhile the “answer is blowin’ in the wind”.
Thank you for the money.

the music industry blows. but you're making a difference, regardless of how big or small you think it is.

thanks for doing what you do. hope you do it for a lot longer.

hey folks'
thanks steltch. i apologize to all for these idiotic compromises around
paying for any of my music. i confess i promised my wife 9 years ago she could have any residual $ from 'dropped' and 'tikkun' for being with
such a loser, but i have tried to put every subsequent cd up for free. my dude at work is trying to load all the cds onto rhapsody,i-shite,napshite,etc. for free streaming but all have a built in
requirement of a 1$ tribute to the c.e.o.ppressors to get it in the system, blah. that's one reason this ridiculous shit is over.
steltch, i'm just going to send you my cds and you can load them on
any myspaceisneither shite for anybody...
after y'all play free music! for a while you won't want to listen to cds, with songs by bands...

Yes, I agree...Trade in your computers for a real life......But not this week, first, something people might want to look into is that there are more Consolidated items and downloads out now than ever....

Heck at CD baby you can download a nice copy of the Audio CD "Free Music, Stop America" for One Dollar!

you can also buy "Tikkun", "The End Of Meaning" and "Dropped" (they are not Free but pretty close to it) from CD Baby.

Also, there seems to be a plan to offer the really entertaining, full length film "Free Music....the fockumentary)" here.

For now you can see it, divided into parts, on youtube. Check it out for the message but mostly it is funny and has some of the coolest music as well as footage!

been lurking and finally decided to drop in ... this is an interesting place. an anti-site of sorts. yes, i want more !C! but we have to remember the first missive - "this is no rock and roll band" ... taking that in to account, we are pretty lucky for what we have thus far.

i think we need to get back to the message and away from how much or how little we get from Adam and co. he does have a family and his priorities seem to reflect on that right? so lets put our records away - and get our friends in the game... i think it would be useful if we use this forum to talk more about what we are doing to effect the change we supposedly favor.

thats enough of my bullsheeit for tonight but remember - lets MAKE change more and TALK change less. throw a fucking brick every now and then.

take care gang and thanks, Adam, for many years of inspiration and the great live shows.

yo steltch and people,
thank you for your truth. we all have an uncle frank if we aren't uncle franks ourselves.. we all deserve to live. re: the fockumentary. it's on
(sadly) youtube now in little pieces, and it'll be here in a few days( i hope).speaking of which, since i don't deal with this box, if y'all want to
spread the idea of free music! on-line, that would be great. i think we'd agree that playing music is a lot more fun way of doing it..
if this piece of plastic and wires is of any use, fucking use it. otherwise, DO THE MOTHERFUCKIN DAMN THING!
go teach this steltch and all. teach it and learn it simultaneously, speak and listen at the same time in real time! we don't need to be a band, get a gig, or have arguments that are called 'band meetings'. we don't need to pay $ to make $.. we don't need to send emails or make phone calls.we don't require approval, mediation,or legitimacy on any level.. just (be) motherfuckers..

Even though i feel stuck between an Agnostic and a Universalist Unitarian, I am constantly feeling as if I need to follow some calling to be real, truthful, loving and deliberate in my actions. I don't presume to be wanting to please god so that I can go to heaven. I am concerned with here and now as well as the future. I'm driven with a passion to constantly do the right things in order to utilize the knowledge and wisdom I have acquired. Because this is my primary "job" in life, I am often an outcast in the worlds of employment, music dealings, even partying. It seems that thick skinned individuals rise to positions of control and power by nature. Humans are special in there Ideal of all being equal and all deserving a chance at happiness regardless of position, skill and, less so, temperament. our empathy. Yet, when the call goes out for a boss or leader it is all too often not the sensitive ones that raise thier hand. The sensitive dont want to control others especially these days with our understanding of existentialism. A less forward thinking type, ready to "sell their soul" stands up and takes the role of leader boss and that person may or may not have any empathy in decision making. Empathy is not profitable and encourages individuals to start to believe life could be much better. There is the argument that we are really still animals and we need to avoid sinking to a dysfunctional and vulnerable level by encouraging an environment that breeds neediness and provides care. In the past only the strongest of us did survive, thrive and become large enough to even think of all having the right to live and with love and respect. On the other hand ancients and even moderns have found ways to find the good and useful in most people. We were driven by not only love and compassion but also intelligence. The intelligence that says that it is beneficial to all to create an inclusive environment. Todays slash and burn mentality has lost what we had gained in that area. Now we are collectively sick and don't know why. for instance, on a small level.....uncle Frank never did well in school or socially but we loved him so he lived with us and inspired us with his alternate view of life. He could even find any number of jobs such as taking the basement of a buildings to live in. He fixed things and we counted on him to tell stories, keep us company and in most cases develope mechanical skills with coat hangers and such to keep us going. Today the cold basement is a high rent, often shabbily maintained money source instead and when the fence breaks we call a service tech to tell us we need a new one. uncle frank lives heavily medicated in a for profit mental institution that bills the government 60 grand a year to feeds him unthinkable bologna for breakfast lunch and diner. He is almost forgotten by his family. After all we must pay the mortgage and car payments, no room for losers like uncle Frank.
Now I ask myself, why do I live this way, I have seen Co-ops where dignity thrives but it is rare and no longer in the burned out parts of the big cities because the city wants to be a winner, a jewel of wealth where the cream of the crop buy lofts and live like kings. The others huddle up next to a space heater in a ghetto only to wake up before sunrise so they can be there to do the hard word that sustains the privileged ones lifestyle. We seem to be moving more and more in this direction not thinking about a sustainable healthy future for us all. After all in this economic world today a lucky one can make a lifetime of money in a year or 3. Today we can see that fewer and fewer can even do that, someone must have noticed and tripled the cost of dignity. Where will this grotesque greed take us!

IT GOT OUT OF ANY IMAGINARY PROPORTION. WE HAVE TO KICK THE “MUSIC BIZZ” THEIR ASS. Did you do your “MySpace course” already at the local social centre, to make your band “famous”? Don’t believe me? It’s real. The course exist! Its time we visit your social centre to jam in front of the door! A FREE course in PLAYING MUSIC!!! FREE MUSIC!!! Yes, I am the guy working on setting up the Free Music Stop America in Europe this summer. Try to get Adam and friends over here. If you see a possibility for us to jam your town this summer, drop me a mail Matski@limbabwe.com . Whatever it is. The local street festival, anti war demo, the yearly hippy pick nick, the squat reunion, The Yankee Go Home Punk Rock Festival,…….or simply a corner of the street. And don’t forget to bring all your friends to join the jam! Did you see the ausum Free Music Stop America video film already? See some snapshots on my site www.limbabwe.com

each other through music and art! if that happens, we'll plan an anti-tour of the u.s.-mexican border, from blackwater( san diego) to
new orleans! again, the point is to do the damn thang locally where you are. if you support bands that are ''political' , encourage them to
see the inherent corporate nature of any kind of 'band' or 'scene'. if
you're in a band, dissolve it and allow your musical and human capabilities to develope uninhibited... this shit is happening!

Great Video, better message, marv sax and guitars!

From Spain...greetings!

a Shout Out to Jackie O M....

September 9, 2007

Jackie-O Motherfucker began as a duo consisting of multi-instrumentalist Tom Greenwood and saxophonist Nester Bucket. The group now has more than twenty rotating members drawn from the U.S. experimental scene. As of 2006, the core of the group is founding member Greenwood.

JOMF's music draws from a variety of subgenres including drone, free jazz, space-rock and is heavily improvisational in its nature. Because they are a collective, rather than a consistent band or group, the sound of their music can change from performance to performance. The group operates its own label of CD-R live recordings, the U-Sound Archive, which features concert recordings from JOMF as well as like-minded subterranean artists such as Double Leopards, Sunroof!, Decaer Pinga and Vibracathedral Orchestra.

The group's first three albums were limited-run vinyl-only releases on now-defunct Portland label Imp Records. Since then, the group has had recordings released by many different labels from around the world.

I will have to hunt down a video if I can but the 100 guitar thing is great. It is funny in a sad way that many people I talked with about this thought it sounded like a "useless idea" but, when they read that they would save $20 on the admission they got excited even though they would have never gone to this block party anyway even for free, especially if up to 100 people were going to "insult" music at once. The $20 savings meant to them that it was worth their time. What a neat trick. Still, closed minds did not show a breakthrough, possibly a seed was planted.

Thanks again all yooz

hey steltch, i hope the guitarkestra was great! to you and all those
'dis'organizing sound gatherings in public spaces, if you have any record( video & or audio) of these non-events, save them and we'll
make a gallery so people can hear/see this shit. obviously, the
important thing is simply to do the damn thing. to 'record' 'free music' would only be for the purpose of demonstrating that it can be and is already happening and to prove it's historical 'existence',
since any different ideas face ridicule, derision, and misconception as well as plain ignorance in their early stages..

hey timezone,
thanks for the nice note! hope your visit to the city is great. if you're
up in portland look us up. it's very important to me that you are
'always making music and giving it away and it's totally fulfilling' and
that you're posting that on this site. this is the confirmation that other people who are playing outside the industry are not crazy. we are beginning to reject 'the rules' and 'the system'. we are begining to
'free music'. this also relates directly to stopping america.
if anybody else is getting into this type of shit, post what you're doing and inspire us to do it ourselves. not just music but anything
you're doing that crushes the system at the same time as it makes you human and happy,(alternative transport-bikes,etc.,organic food
production, social living,etc.,etc.)
rock on people! we are the end of america, we are the end of bands, we are the beginning of a different future!

oye Adam, I am passing through San Francisco and was thinking about how your artwork has influenced me. A lot of people talk about how bands "changed their life" but usually in not-so-tangible ways. But I have been a vegetarian for about 15 years now and feel really grateful to be in excellent health! Also I think my life has been enriched by having some kind of guidance to critically analyze sexism and homophobia and make better choices for myself, choices to expand my community and find ways to support others who haven't had access to the privileges I've inherited. This was when I was a teenager, and it was perfect timing for me to have those kinds of messages wrapped up in some bad-ass music, which was perhaps the only place I would have listened at that time. Now that I'm a bit older I can also respect your progression as an artist and not wanting to repeat yourself stylistically or remain developmentally stuck. Lastly, thanks for encouraging me to look elsewhere for a career other than in the music industry! I am always making music and giving it away and it's totally fulfilling without staking my livelihood on it. I think the internet has been somewhat helpful in this although as always the most important connections are made in one's immediate community and family. Anyhow, cheers, man, ya done good. I hope you keep recording and putting music out there in addition to playing live.

GRAB A GUITAR AND GO TO THE HIDEOUT BLOCK PARTY FOR FREE!
A MESSAGE FROM CHIC-A-GO-GO DANCER STEVE KRAKOW: On saturday sept. 8, at high noon at the Hideout block party, 1354 w.wabansia we will have a Guitarkestra at the Hideout Block Party. Being in the guitarkestra will get you free admission for the day ($20 normally), plus a few drink tickets. i'm asking all to be there by 11:30am at the LATEST for instructions, and to please bring guitar, amp, power strip, and extension cord if you got it--other stringed instruments are ok, heck even a few non-stringed things are ok, effects pedals are encouraged, acoustic guitars are ok too, but you sure won't be heard. absolutely NO experience is necessary, we will be playing one "E" chord shape into infinity, so even small children are welcome. no need to RSVP, just show up, and we are hoping for 100 guitarists this time!! so pass this info on to your pals, please!

to steltch and ldopas,
thanks for the awesome recent comments. your two last big entries put together read like a perfect definition of the crisis of the artist-musician-person.
ldopas, i totally hear your point about me encouraging everyone to play music as though that means something by itself. what i mean, is, in the future i and everybody else will have to become engineers, we'll have to learn how to build shit. and your creativity will be as important as your other skills. that future is happening now. also, let me assure you, i work at cdbaby so i made sure nobody makes profits off this shit. i'm sure if we were in the same room with instruments we'd be making music and it would fucking rock. i'm sure steltch would agree with me.
steltch, your observations of the musicians' experience should be read by all musicians and all people. i work with 75 musicians. young, old, culturally and creatively diverse, sold 0 records, sold 5 million records, every kind of music possible, all have to eventually admit that the industry is a joke, the sandbox is for everybody. obviously, one person's 'talents and achievements' are no more valid than another's because they have the priviledge-curse to be ground up and shat out of the culture industry and their 'name is known'. fuck that shit. we and everything else will become sand. if we don't play in the sandbox... i would love to jam with you and anybody you play with! your street or ours?

One more thing,
Ldopas,
If you design things you are most definitely an artist already.
If you are involved in engineering refineries, you know things about energy and the environment. You are in a seat of power to effect the world more than any pop star. This is your era to put out the best, most groundbreaking piece of gear ever. I know you are not in charge of policy but instead of writing a song you may be able to, someday help power our vans and amps with hemp or garbage or something.

Steltch

August 28, 2007

Hey Ldopas,
I geuss I relate to what Adam is doing with this site and releasing music that may or may not exist because I myself have a long history of being inspired by anti populist art and philosophy. Higher level statements in art stimulate me more that a really rockin tune or even a stimulating social commentary. I also find these things available in abundance. There are so many great blogs, I dont even bother adding my ideas to the mix so that I can avoid preaching to the converted. Although I did not experience the fame of consolidated, I started releasing records and CDs at about the same time as Consolidated. My project, "Steltch" came clos to a contract with Wax Trax at one point but because of the great Meat Beat and Consolidated stuff coming out and the resemblance of my stuff to it, they took a pass. I had never heard consolidated or meat beat when I started and I myself thought upon hearing it, wow this is similar but much better than Steltch. I became a fervent longtime fan of both. My art self education continues to this date. The fact that Ive never made money or experienced having a fan hurts a bit but I never tried to write a hit or cop a rock star attitude so what do I expect. I have had personal peak experiences and met some very impressive people through doing music. I also dont know how to hake music, I just do it and I will jam with anyone for the fun and also it is like a ritual sometimes. Getting into a groove. When I started it was guitar, I would listen to the others jam and quietly search the strings for a note that sounds good, then I would turn up and play a minimal rhythm just to add a bit of pepper to the mix. Other jammers liked that I did not take over the song or spazz out with a bunch of noise. Soon I discovered little box patters of other notes that always worked with the main note and suddenly I was a lead guitarist. Many but not all people can do this. Some really cant or dont have the opportunity but anyone can get a guitat and experiment at home. I friend can help show you how simple most songs are. If you like rock music you can noodle along with most of it and after getting your hands to do what your brain is telling them,
plug into a loud amp with some jammers and let er fly. I think music is magical but that doesnt it cant be made by anyone. When you were a child and someone plopped you into the sandbox, there was no pressure to create a masterpiece. I still live like a child in a sandbox, I want to have fun, make a mess, make friends and then walk away from the box, I dont want to sell it or copy write it. I just want to come back tomorrow and play some more.
I do understand what your saying on a personal level because Im 44 now, I fear most of the good times are in the past. Ive had some personal tragedys that have left me, shall we say, "less than extremely happy" I am wrapped up in survival as a poor person in a mean city in an even meaner world. No great whimsy left for me these days. The sandbox often sits untouched but not always, and it is still there that I love the most.

contact me at steltch@gmail.com and we can get some trading going on.

Wow, a few comments here since I last posted.

Adam, thanks for stopping by man...on your own website! Lordy.

Look I hear what you are saying. But here's the thing. You urge me to "go play some fucking music!", but seeing as I cannot play a note on any instrument or indeed have any musical talent whatsoever, how in your idealism would you have me make music?

See Im a big admirer of your talent. You can play and sing and say important things. But I fear you have got lost in the detritis of your beliefs.

It hasnt freed you, in fact its imprisoned you.

The world works on a horses for courses. Im good at things, but not playing music, I do those things Im good at and hope to make a difference. Engineering and building shit is one. I dont shout at you and others to start building refineries for free do I. Because I suspect you would tell me you have no Engineering background. Right? Exactly.

I think you are supremely talented at what you do, ie the music. By not doing it anymore, we've a right to be disappointed, as people like me who feel your ability to put important message to quality music inspires people like me.

To think that this stance is altering anything, or girding up some sort of movement here or in the World I think is flawed at best.

Anyway, I will "buy" the DVD.

You talk labels. Yeah no one wants labels. But guess what, unless we all do the same thing, think the same, wear the same, create the same.....we will be labelled. Black, white, male, female, American, English, Left Handed, Right Handed, intelligent, not intelligent etc etc. Its no problem, you just work with it.

Interesting you talk system, specifically the music industry. This diminushion of lines and needs to "artist", "label" etc is happening anyway and its nothing to do with your strategy you outline.

Its to do with the fact that channels such as the internet allow bands to get their music out there easily to the public without the overhead of corporates and management. Good, yepp its a good thing.

However these bands need to eat. If we are pushing the free music agenda, how are these bands meant to eat? Unless you are advocating creating music as a side issue to making a living for these bands. But isnt this a betrayal of their creative passios and drives?

Anyway Adam, I think you are a really musically talented guy with important things to say. Its a shame that for whatever reason your deep set beliefs dont allow you to see any other views.

I dont, for example, see why you dont create new music and hang it off this, your, website for free download. Its a win win, you get the messages our, and its free. Heck its your site, apart from a small amount to an ISP there are no other overheads. Dont forget CD Baby makes profit, a word you clearly despise.

To the regulars here, hello again! ;-) Apologies for the rant. Steltch how you doing man, we never did conclude the music swap did we, PM me! ;-)

hi guys! i'm vegeprincess and i've been listening to consolidated for a few years now! i can appreciate very much the message that consolidated try to convey in their music. i find that oppression of minorities is possibly the largest social problem that we face in modern society. however, i do take issue with a point concerning consolidated's ideology. why all the animosity against fascists? don't they realize that fascists are a group that have been opressed politically since world war 2? why not speak out and defend them too? it seems to me that consolidated harbor more than a few prejudices themselves, thus making themselves appear to be more than just a little hypocritical. if someone could perhaps enlighten me as to why this is the case, i would very much appreciate it cuz it's been bugging the hell out of me.

thanks ;D

Hi Adam (and fellow Consolidated listening brethren)!

I love you guys' music so freaking much, it really helps add a spark to my daily life. I think the issues you speak out on are extremely important and I appreciate the effort you make to get them heard by a wider audience.

Consolidated are my favorite band, tied for first place with N.W.A. Both speak out on similar issues, albeit from very different (yet equally valid) perspectives. For instance, when Consolidated speak out and denounce violence against women and homosexuals, I compare their point of view to that of Eazy-E when he describes beating a hooker in one of his songs. Consolidated also preach blind subordination to the greater collective good, whereas N.W.A. advocate throwing social responsibility to the wind and doing whatever you please. I think both equally extreme points of view sow the seeds of a very interesting Heglian dialectic that can help resolve modern cultural tension and point the way to a brighter future.

Anyway, I hope you find my point of view interesting. Keep up the good work, fellas. Free music! Stop America! Eat fresh, tasty vegeburgers!

July 1, 2007

I think we ALL thank you for this post Adam. I also thank you for your generous contibutions. Where I live I unfortunately feel little impact from Free Music, although if I could download something new that I liked for free, I certainly would. These would probably have to come from someone new, because I can't see anybody who is established suddenly performing and/or passing out recordings for free, as much as I would like it to be so. ( I also don't think I'd want anything free from anybody current.) I myself am not musical, but I do write, so any endowments on my part would have to be along those lines. If I were more inclined, it might be interesting to see what experimental music I created. (It would be a failed experiment no doubt!-lol). As for the free market system, I can't readily dismiss capitalism without more argument, but I do appreciate your desire to see people experiment with alternatives. It's as simple as not living beyond your means. People don't reject capitalism so much as they are unable to practice it, I think. My rejection comes in the form of always trying to save energy (my electric bill is outrageous). Maybe someone should start a Free Energy movement as well! Thanks again Adam! :) P.S.- Great posts Spadger and Malenthious! Very funny! I think I'm starting to feel the way both of you do.
